Training our Horses
"Whenever you are with a horse you are actually training it. Every person who handles or rides a horse is a trainer. You are either training the horse to be unresponsive and disrespectful, or you are training the horse to be responsive and respectful. " - Steve Brady.
This is so true, however many people are unaware of the fact. They often say "My horse does this, My horse has started doing that, He only does it sometimes... etc". It is not important what the horse does, what is important is why the horse is doing it, and what we do about what the horse is doing. Why is our horse doing that? What caused him to act that way? What are the consequences of the horses undesirable behaviour? Are we consistant? Is it effective? Why? Why not?
All horses need an education. They are not born knowing what we want! They need to be educated, taught manners, cues and commands, so they can become a valuable, obedient, respectable, well mannered member of the equine society. Some people may not have the time or skills to start this process off, and that's where we can help. We can put cues and commands on your horse that are clear and solid, and then teach you how to use them, so you can better control and communicate with your horse.
Can you help my problem horse?
Yes.
Float loading problems, horses who wont tie up, kicking, biting, bucking, rearing, bolting - bring it on. Owning a horse should be a pleasurable experience. If you are having problems, the sooner you get help the better. Once we have determined the cause of the behaviour, we can take steps to retrain more desirable behaviours. It takes time to change negative behaviours and turn them into positive behaviours, and the less established the habit is, the easier it will be to break. Talk to us about your specific problems today, we can help.
Honesty is what you will receive when you ask for Andrew or myself to assess your situation. We have told people in the past that their horse is not suitable, and we have convinced others that the horse is fine and they just need to work on the relationship. At the end of the day, you have asked for an opinion and this is what you will get. You do not have to agree with it and we will not force any of our clients to make a decision - this must come from the client.
My horse is well behaved, does he still need training?
Yes.
At the very least, we need a minimum amount of training of our horses to keep them well behaved. Otherwise, they will start to revert to natural behaviour, which can see them become slowly but surely, less and less obedient. The more time we spend practising cues and commands, the more tuned in and reactive our horses will become to our requests. It is up to the individual as to how educated they want their horse, but at the very least we need to be able to safely and easily catch, lead, tie up, handle feet, float load, wash and release our horses.
This should be automatic, fast, and easy for both handler and horse. Additionally, we should be able to saddle, bridle, mount, dismount, walk, trot, canter, halt, steer left and right and backup with confidence and obedience from the horse. These are basic things that many horses lack, and many people struggle with. Horses are an expensive animal to keep, so if you cannot do these basic things safely, confidently, and happily, you might be better off not having one. We can show you how to achieve these basic needs, and develop a much better relationship with your horse.
But what will all this cost?
We like to think of it as an investment. The more time and education you put into your horse, the more you will get out of it. With the right training and follow up work any horse can become pleasurable to ride and handle for life, making it a life long investment for you and your horse's future. Lets face it, nobody wants a disobedient, ill mannered and potentially dangerous horse in their life. We offer training with full feed, agistment and rugging inclusive. We work our horses every day, 6 days a week. You are more than welcome to bring your horse out for an obligation free assessment.
We love our horses and do our best to ensure their safety, health and well being, which includes both physical and mental health. Call us today to discuss your needs.
